Use your speed to try to interfer with the opponent creating a cage. Keep as many players out of TZ's at the end of your turn as possible.

The linerats are just fodder who basically serve a purpose to screen for your runners or tie people up, the storm vermin are also very important at punching holes through the defense. However they are easy to hurt and should be protected at all costs, unless the situation is desperate you should never willingly base to base anyone with a gutter runner (unless its like a skink or something equally weak)
Skaven can easily score from well inside their own half with a simple 9 move run and hand off from one GR to another they can cover 18 squares easily (22 with gfis) if your lucky enough to get one with +MA and sprint/sure feet you can score in 1 turn. They are arguably (with wardancers) one of the best starting pieces in the game. Skaven rely almost entirely on their gutter runners.
