There’s an oddly subtle tragic nature to the design of this animal which feels much more purposeful from zombies and mutants we’ve seen in previous games. While it's been a few years since the 2020 unveiling now, all eyes are on the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase, launching as part of the E3 2023 schedule on June 11, for more information. The snowy landscapes we see in this preview feel much more distinct than the environments in the previous State of Decay games, which feels like a hint that this upcoming title may incorporate survival aspects related to environmental hazards (such as warmth).įinally, there is a much more “muted” vibe to the entire affair best exemplified by the zombie animal who serves as the trailer’s primary threat. It also feels like the environment will be a much bigger player in State of Decay 3.
It will join Xbox Game Pass as a day-one addition. This is no surprise to fans of the franchise, who've been hoping for a followup since State of Decay 2came out in 2018 from developer Undead Labs. State of Decay 3 was officially announced during Xbox 20/20, and will launch for Xbox Series X.

While survival has always been an element of the State of Decay series, this trailer seemed to lean heavy on the idea that the human survivor we briefly follow is outnumbered, under-supplied, and surrounded by danger. When it was announced in 2020, Undead Labs said the project was in early pre-production, though there haven’t ben any updates on it since then.The biggest thing we took away from this trailer is the theme of survival.
The game doesn’t yet have a release date. State of Decay 3 is in development for Xbox Series X/S and PC. “You mentioned Undead Labs, they’re working with The Coalition up in Vancouver, our Gears of War studio, using some of the technology around Unreal 5 and some of the stuff that’s been in Gears of War before to bring that into State of Decay,” Booty said (transcriber by Pure Xbox). Speaking in a recent episode of the Major Nelson podcast, Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty revealed that Gears of War developer The Coalition is aiding Undead Labs with its expertise on Unreal Engine 5, which is the engine that State of Decay 3 is being built on as well. Undead Labs has kept up support for State of Decay 2 in 2022, with some updates that have been quite substantial, but the bulk of the studio’s support, of course, is on the upcoming full sequel, State of Decay 3. The survival title has been in development for a while, and interestingly enough, its developer has been getting some support from other developers under the Xbox Game Studios banner as well.
